NASA EPSCoR funding to help UI engineering professor advance next-generation nuclear propulsion systems

NASA has selected the research proposal of Xuan Song, a University of Iowa assistant professor of industrial and systems engineering, among four Iowa projects to receive NASA EPSCoR funding. Song’s team will collaborate with scientists at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center to develop novel additive manufacturing (or 3D printing) approaches to fabricate complex ceramic components with high strength and extreme heat resistance.

She will join other groundbreaking engineers from industry, academia, and government at the event hosted by Amazon.

University of Iowa researchers selected to aid NASA mission

Jun Wang, assistant director of the Iowa Technology Institute, was named the principal investigator for two NASA grants worth $1.56 million. NASA’s TEMPO mission, set to launch this year, is intended to revolutionize air quality forecasting. TEMPO, which stands for Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring Pollution, is a space-based ultraviolet and visible spectrometer scheduled to be launched into space aboard a commercial satellite — after nearly ten years of planning — before the year is over.
