Mission Area

Research Topics

  • Biomaterials and biomechanics
  • Computational mechanics

The BioMechanics Of Soft Tissues (BioMOST) lab contributes to the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the soft tissue structures in the human body by drawing upon principles of engineering mechanics.

Title/Position
Faculty Affiliate, Iowa Technology Institute;
Director, BioMOST Lab;
Professor of biomedical engineering
Suresh Raghavan is a professor in the Roy J. Carver Department of Biomedical Engineering. In addition to directing the BioMechanics Of Soft Tissues (BioMOST) Lab, he is a researcher at the Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging.

Research Overview

The BioMost lab develops tools for plumbing the human body. Principles in biomechanics, biomaterials, and medical image processing are used to study diseases of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems and devices used to repair them. Work includes use of experimental and computational methods. Experimental methods include fluid flow loops, tissue mechanical testing, electrochemical methods, fabrication of silicone replicas, etc., and computational methods include finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, computational geometry, image processing, etc. Organizations such as NIH, American Heart Association, NSF, Fulbright Foundation, Carver Charitable Trust, and the University of Iowa’s Provost Fund have funded our work.
