Mission Area

Research Topics

  • Biomaterials and biomechanics
  • Computational mechanics

The BioMechanics Of Soft Tissues (BioMOST) Lab develops tools for plumbing the human body.

Principles in biomechanics, biomaterials, and medical image processing are used to study diseases of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems and devices used to repair them. Work includes use of experimental and computational methods. Experimental methods include fluid flow loops, tissue mechanical testing, electrochemical methods, fabrication of silicone replicas, etc., and computational methods include finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, computational geometry, image processing, etc. Organizations such as NIH, American Heart Association, NSF, Fulbright Foundation, Carver Charitable Trust, and the University of Iowa’s Provost Fund have funded our work.
