In November 2020, Stephen Baek, assistant professor of industrial and systems engineering, and H.S. Udaykumar, a professor of mechanical engineering and interim associate dean for research and graduate programs, both at the University of Iowa, received the 2020 Defense Innovation Award from TechConnect. Udaykumar and Baek received the award for their presentation “MaterIQ: An AI-based software tool for materials-by-design” at the Defense TechConnect Summit.
University of Iowa Technology Institute faculty, staff, and students have found creative ways to forge ahead at a time when COVID-19-related closures have limited access to laboratories and facilities. Some ITI labs have begun ramping back up this month as part of a phased-in, three-tier return to research on campus, while others wait their turn.
Stephen Baek, director of the Visual Intelligence Laboratory, Xiaodong Wu, professor and ITI researcher, and Yusen He, graduate research assistant in the Visual Intelligence Laboratory, have published a groundbreaking discovery of cancer biomarkers using deep neural networks.
Eric Chun, a graduate research assistant in the Visual Intelligence Laboratory, presented a paper entitled "NADS-Net: A Nimble Architecture for Driver and Seat Belt Detection via Convolutional Neural Networks" in the Autonomous Driving Workshop at the International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV 2019), one of the most prestigious conferences in computer vision and artificial intelligence.
Stephen Baek, director of the Visual Intelligence Laboratory, is on a team of engineers from the University of Iowa and the University of Missouri who have been awarded a five-year, $7.5M grant to apply machine learning to energetic materials design.
