What do you work on and what do you enjoy most about your work?

I am on a multidiscipline team that is working on quantifying oil weathering via a peak-cognizant algorithm. I am also working on developing a feature extraction technique using domain knowledge for sonar target classification. I like that these projects have important real-world applications. For example, the former project will further our understanding on how harmful toxins in spilled oil degrade and impact the environment and wildlife. I enjoy the ability to pursue individual ideas to further each research project.

What brought you to the Iowa Technology Institute?

When I was researching graduate colleges I knew I wanted to continue pursuing education in my passion of signal processing. I came across Dr. Sen Gupta’s research areas and I thought it was a great fit. I applied, was accepted, and a year later I’m still happy I chose University of Iowa.

What achievements are you most proud of?

At this stage in my career, I am most proud of following in my father and grandfathers footsteps by receiving a bachelor’s degree in engineering. We all received an ‘order of the engineer’ ring together and I will never forget that feeling of accomplishment.

What are your goals for the future? What do you hope to be doing professionally in 10 years?

After graduation I want to continue working as a scientist in a Navy research lab to gain real-world experience. Eventually, I want to become a college professor where I can excite students the same way that my professors have done for me.
