The Ascent Award recognizes excellence in research and leadership in the atmospheric and climate sciences from honorees between eight and 20 years of receiving their PhD.

Michael Schnieders is associate professor in the Roy J. Carver Department of Biomedical Engineering in the College of Engineering and the Department of Biochemistry in the Carver College of Medicine, as well as a faculty affiliate with the Iowa Technology Institute. Schnieders is a leader in using physics-based simulation and modeling to understand protein structure, work that has important applications in areas such as genetics, drug design, and disease diagnostics.

Bouckley Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineers from Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). Song, whose work focuses on innovations in 3D printing, is also a faculty researcher at the Iowa Technology Institute, a research arm of the UI College of Engineering.

A University of Iowa PhD candidate working as a research assistant at the Iowa Technology Institute has been selected for the National Defense Science and Engineering (NDSEG) Fellowship Program. Bernice Kubicek was awarded this fellowship to continue work born out of her time with the Ananya Sen Gupta Research Group. She has conducted research on sonar autonomous target recognition through the development of feature extraction algorithms that aim to improve the classification and recognition of objects deep underwater.
